What type of doctor is dpm

In fact, general medical doctors and orthopedists may only cover the feet and ankles in just a few weeks of training while your podiatrist invests years in understanding the complexities of these parts of the body.

With over 26 bones, 33 joints 20 of which are actively articulated , and more than a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the human foot alone, podiatrists have a much better idea of what might be wrong with their patients with foot and ankle problems. Podiatrists are far more than simply foot doctors who treat toenail fungus, calluses, and bunions.

In fact, your podiatrist is a highly trained foot and ankle surgeon who has received in-depth training to address problems, injuries, and complaints of the lower extremities. To become a doctor of podiatric medicine, your podiatrist has completed podiatry-specific medical school training, clinical rotations in medicine and surgery, and a residency in podiatric medicine and surgery.

To maintain board certification, your podiatrist must also complete regular continuing education and training activities to stay on top of their skills and make the most of emerging technologies and treatment options. When seeking a podiatrist, it is important to look for a doctor whom you are comfortable with, who understands you as a whole person, and who is thoroughly trained and able to provide the level of care you both need and deserve.

Able to treat a broad spectrum of podiatric issues, Dr. David B. Laha takes special pride in performing reconstructive foot surgery and offering sports medicine of the lower extremities. Alissa Carbone 08 Aug Legel is the BEST foot doctor hands down! He knows his stuff. He was very thorough with his exam, explained everything and was very conservative! He answered all my questions, and I had a lot of them! To top it off, he has a great staff! Maria Hernandez 05 Aug Go see this doctor!

Knows his stuff. Great staff. Beautiful facility. Discusses options with you and listens to your needs. Timothy Maughan 02 Jul This morning I had my first appointment with Dr.

Legel, and he was exactly the type of doctor I was hoping for. He was direct, patient, thorough, and very matter-of-fact with the examination process and all of the explanations he gave. Basically, bedside manner and knowledge were both topnotch. His schedule was pretty booked up, so I had to get in touch every few days to check for cancellations to try and get in to see him sooner. Even though I had to wait a while to see him, it was totally and completely worth it.

Meeting with Dr. Legel has been the best decision I have made for treatment so far. He's conservative in his approach and I have a lot of confidence in everything he told me. Valarie McLeckie 12 Feb I have thoroughly enjoyed having my feet treated here. Legel is very thorough, tells you things in a way that are simple to understand and what to do better. He never makes you feel rushed either with your concerns which is something that I appreciate. Bryce Kolodziej 17 Dec John Cervantez 20 Nov Dr Legel saved my husband!!!!

We live in a small Northeast Texas area. Long story short kinda , my husband was supposed to have hammer toe correction. The recovery time was supposed to last weeks. The local doctor keep my husband in a cast for two weeks. The doctor said he wasn't supposed to be in much pain after the surgery. He was in constant PAIN!! After he took his cast off, his toes looked horrible!! The second toe had a pin in it, and he had the hardest time taking it out.

We left there and my husband was still in excruciating pain almost daily. I would call the nurse and she said, " I don't know why he's pain. I'll call out for more medicine. After removing the cast, the doctor said he didn't know what was going on because his skin was peeling off of it!! Freaked us out!!! He said it could be due to his foot fungus.

After the 3rd week, my husband was so much pain that I called the doctor to come back in before a the weekend. He toe was turning black, and the doctor said, " It doesn't look like gangrene and it didn't look infected. I was thinking. Something is wrong!! His skin is peeling off and his toe was turning black. I was crying every night scared of the uncertainty of my husbands foot. I couldn't bare him being in pain anymore. His toes were starting to scare me, and I was afraid infection was spreading.

My husband is only 35 and this was going out of control! We left the doctor for lunch and I Googled the best foot doctors in Dallas, Texas. Dallas is about 2. Legel's name was one of the top 5. I liked his picture and read the reviews. I started crying. I was so grateful!!! He ordered so many test that weren't performed on my husband before or after my husbands surgery. After looking at my husband's foot, Dr.

Legel said, " There is nothing normal about your foot, and if I was your doctor I wouldn't have sent you home. He said, " I'm a realist and I'll do whatever I can to save your toe. But looking at it you might lose it. He had been in so much pain. He had a bone infection and his circulation was low in his foot.

Legel and his team took care of my husband. He would call often to check on him. I would recommend DR. Thank you Dr. We were blessed to have met you and your staff!! I added a pic of J. I hope he doesn't get to upset. I thought my phone was on camera mode, but oh well!! Love ya, J! And definitely you too DR. Legel was great he knew exactly what was causing my problem and was able to get me squared away and on my way in no time the whole staff was laughing and engaging with the other patients it was truly a great atmosphere.

LaRonda Jernigan 28 Aug I would recommend my family to see Dr. His office and staff are impeccable. Thank you so much for providing the best care possible! Harris goes above and beyond for all patients; it is amazing! Grace Mickle 10 Aug I went to an urgent care place for bad heel pain a few days ago. Today, I noticed my pain was getting worse since my urgent care visit so I was desperate to find an actual podiatrist that could see me same day.

However, podiatrists are not medical doctors. They will instead receive four years of education at a podiatric medical school before performing another three or four years of residency training. The sphere of the treatment they provide is limited only to the ankle and foot areas. Podiatrists often treat ingrown toenails, calluses, fallen arches, heel spurs and problems related to abuse or injury. We are often asked what is the difference between a podiatrist and an Orthopedic surgeon and when is it a wiser choice to see an Orthopedic surgeon.

A podiatrist does not graduate from Medical School but rather podiatry school and is not a Doctor of Medicine. They are qualified to diagnose and treat certain conditions of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.
