How many avatar movies are there

The divisive tale of the Na'vi and the greedy futuristic humans trying to bulldoze their home became the highest-grossing movie of all time in , overtaking Cameron's own Titanic record. Avatar 's visuals and technical achievements blew audiences away, and the film remains the best example of 3-D cinema to date, however, opinion has soured in more recent years with regards to Avatar 's plot and moral leanings. Talk of a sequel began even before the blue tree-huggers hit the big screen, and work on an Avatar 2 was officially confirmed shortly after.

As with the first movie, James Cameron has been painstakingly realizing his creative vision and waiting for technology to catch up with his imagination, causing over a decade to pass without a continuation of the Avatar story.

Given Avatar 's box office domination, the initial sequel announcement was far from surprising. The fact that James Cameron is once again taking his sweet time is also not at all shocking.

The real eyebrow-raiser is that a grand total of four Avatar sequels have been announced, all of which are currently in various stages of production. Even for a wildly successful movie with major franchise potential like Avatar , this is an unprecedented move. To commit to four movies in one hit is incredibly ambitious, regardless of the record-breaking debut effort on which to build upon.

The quartet of Avatar sequels in development perhaps emphasizes just how much money the original movie made, striking big in domestic and international markets, as well as benefiting from considerable word of mouth. The sequels arguably have even more financial promise.

Motion-capture filming was finally wrapped up in November of , with the live-action filming to follow. Live-action filming in New Zealand then began February of , lasting until November of that year and breaking for the holidays, resuming in The Covid pandemic halted the production of Avatar 2 on March 17, , forcing production to remain in Los Angeles indefinitely.

Filming in New Zealand finally resumed in June , with James Cameron announcing in September of that the live-action filming was now complete. While many of the Avatar 2 details have remained under wraps, we do know that this second installment is set on Pandora approximately 12 years after the first movie.

However, nothing has been officially confirmed just yet and, even if the documentation is accurate, the titles could very well change before release.

The core cast from the original film, including Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Sam Worthington, are all on long-running contracts, so they will be returning for the sequels. James Cameron has revealed only a few details about the sequels. The first, and most important, is that much of it will take place underwater. From the set of the sequels: ZoeSaldana , Sam Worthington, Kate Winslet, and Cliff Curtis taking a break from underwater performance capture for a quick photo!

Fun fact: Much of the performance capture took place in this , gallon tank, built specifically for the sequels. We also know that each sequel will be a standalone adventure, rather than another instalment in a serialised story.
