How does the mummy end

So what does Nick become at the end of The Mummy? Spoilers to follow. Well, he definitely doesn't become a mummy. For anyone thinking that the movie was going to somehow pull the rug out from under the audience and have Cruise take Boutella's place as the embalmed baddie, that's not what happens — but it's not that far off.

The plot deals with Princess Ahmanet , a 5,year-old Egyptian royal who made a deal with Set, God of the Dead, to gain power over Egypt after her father had a son, robbing her of her inheritance. She killed her father, his wife, and her little brother, and was set to sacrifice her "chosen" man to become a vessel for Set on Earth so they could rule together.

But soldiers intervened and killed her chosen before she got the chance, and then buried her alive. Like Ahmanet, Set's evil power has changed him into something monstrous. Nick establishes that he and Set are now constantly wrestling for control over his body - a curse Jenny knows Nick must now carry forever.

In the end, Nick uses his power to resurrect his buddy Chris Jake Johnson , and together they go back to searching for adventure in the Middle Eastern region of the world. Tom Cruise's Nick Morton is now established as the second anti-heroic monster figure in the Dark Universe franchise - the first being Russell Crowe's Dr. Cursed to forever wrestle with the Egyptian god Set over control of his consciousness, Nick vows to try to something good with his immense powers.

As the rest of the Dark Universe cinematic universe takes shape, Nick could logically become an important MacGuffin in the saga - an all-powerful figure that both sides, light and dark, seek to control in order to further their own, respective, ends.

However, the curve ball in that scenario is what Nick wants for himself. As people who had seen movies before, even as kids we understood that heroes Evelyn Rachel Weisz , Rick Brendan Fraser , and Jonathan John Hannah had a very good chance of making it out alive, no matter how perilous the situation got. Meanwhile, Imhotep Arnold Vosloo was probably going to be defeated, one way or another. It didn't look good for treacherous Beni Kevin J. O'Connor either.

The plot of the ending follows this logic, while also cleverly laying down track for a potential sequel — which is how we got a certain underrated adventure film series on HBO Max right now, among many, many others.

However, as the sands of time have continued to flow, it's become clear that there may be more to learn from the ending of The Mummy than first meets the eye. The characters' fates tell us about the movie's message, including the key factor required for surviving in the world of The Mummy and the "right" way to think about treasure.

After Imhotep has died — with the sequel-setting-up line "Death is only the beginning" — Beni accidentally triggers the destruction of the city of Hamunaptra when he rests a heavy bag of treasure on a booby-trapped lever. He and Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan run to escape as the doors and ceilings start closing from above. We already know Beni is only interested in self-preservation and wealth. That greed literally triggered the event that leads to his death.

And even as the city is falling above him, he continues to drag the sack of treasure, which slows him down until he's forced to abandon it to escape through a closing door. Beni catches up to the others but is seconds too late to follow them to safety through another closing doorway. If he'd left the treasure behind from the start, he may have made it in time.
